11. The Common School

Turn around the corner at Cleveland Street and walk a little further to the bluestone building with a plaque over its door. This is the Common School which opened on the 9th October 1864 built through the fund raising committee led by Rev. W.T. Whan.. The teachers residence was built later and adjoins the back of the building.  If you go around the back of the building you will see a circular concrete block which is the top of an underground tank. Many properties had these sorts of tanks to store household water.

Cleveland Street was named after Thomas Cleveland , who above all, is responsible for Skipton's tree lined streets and pleasant parks.
The red brick building beside the Common School served the Freemasons until 1997, when the Skipton Masonic Lodge disbanded and the building was sold to a private owner.
