9. Gepps Cottage

Imagine how people lived in the 1800s by peeping inside Gepp's Cottage, one of the earliest surviving buildings in Skipton. It was erected in 1852 at a cost of 50 pounds for William Allan, a store keeper. The cottage retains the wooden shingles, secured by handmade nails under the iron roof. The remains of the original Scottish wood stove still exist. There have been many occupants over the years, some being the fore-bearers of families still in the area- the family of John and Francis Grist being one. The cottage belongs to Mrs. Joy Gepp, purchased early in 1963 by Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Gepp as part of the property related to their Timber and Hardware business, originally established to service the newly developing Soldier Settlement farms.
