Down the hill from the Catholic Church you come to the
Mechanics Hall which was built in 1880 for
approximately 200 pounds- the money raised from local donations and a government
grant. The next year the Hall and library combined. The hall was officially
opened on the 5th November 1880 at a big ball- tickets cost 10 shillings and 7/6
for ladies. This hall was found to be too small and a bigger hall was opened in
1905, the supper room being added in 1932.(Ch. 13 in "Out of the Past"
by Claud Notman)
In 2003 it was restored with money from the Corangamite Shire.
Today it is used for many functions such as the Skipton Rose Show, Cabaret
Balls, Concerts, cards and many community meetings.
